As far as the most picturesque destinations go, Watergate Bay is one of the North Coast’s worst kept secrets. Here’s 3 reasons why we love the bay, and why its one of the most family friendly surf destinations in the UK.
1. The Surf
Perfect for first-timers and family surf lessons – Watergate Bay is pretty consistent at delivering the small, cheerful waves ideal for kids and parents to hang ten! The 2-mile stretch of sandy beach is popular with water sports enthusiasts for a reason, and if you feel like you’re up for the challenge of bigger waves this coast has more to offer. In 2007 Watergate played host to the English Nationals Surfing Championships!
2. The Day Out
Watergate Bay is perfect for family surf lessons
The location is stunning and the people are friendly. Whether you’re judging the young ‘Groms’ sandcastle building contest, or going on a costal walk, it really is the perfect day out! After we’ve got you standing on a few waves, you can pop into the Watergate Bay Hotel. Take the kids (and even the dog!) and check out the outstanding play area, grab a drink or sit out on the sun deck. Also, on a clear day, there is a great westward view of Newquay, looking out to The Atlantic.
3. The Food
Watergate Bay is a small location, host to some of the greatest places in the South West for family meals. There’s no Big Mac’s or Kentucky Fried nonsense here; instead The Bay offers Jamie Oliver’s ‘Fifteen’, ‘Wax’ and Watergate Bay Hotel’s own restaurants: ‘Zacry’s’, ‘Living Space’ and ‘The Beach Hut’ (located on the beach – in case you were wondering). Each with a stunning and view of the coast. Many of the restaurants are dog friendly too!
